This week I decided it was time to start toilet training Kye! He's been ready for a little while not but with a lot of stress and hostility in the environment the last few month and also a new sibling I though that it probably wasn't the best time to introduce it to him. But now we have a steady routine developed there is no time like the present so it began!
The first thing I needed to decide was, was I going to start potty training him sitting or standing. Most experts recommend beginning potty training with boys sitting to both wee and poo because it can be overwhelming and hard for children to really identify what's following this feeling of 'fullness' when they need the toilet. So once they are confident and avoid accidents this is when you can teach them how to stand to wee like their fathers/brothers etc so this is the approach I decided to take. So the last few days we have really just spent "getting to know the potty" I bought Kye a set of stickers and he got to decorate his potty, it was clean and unused of cause! The other thing is whenever I go to the toilet I take Kye with me when I can. I talk to him about it and sit him on his potty next to me, at this stage I have only taken his pants and nappy off a few times because I just want him to get familiar with his potty and that mummy uses her potty and Kye will use his too. I'm working on a lot of talking and explaining also LOTS of praise, patience and consistency. I have also been asking Kye "do you need to wee?" most cases he'll answer no and in 5 minutes he will have a wet nappy so my plan for next week is to ask him and just take him into the bathroom anyway. I've also had suggestions to get rid of nappies all together and just put undies on him so he can feel when he's wet, but I think that's a bit of an embarrassing thing to do, but we are going to go shopping for some cool undies this week to show him some of the advantages of being a big boy! Another thing we are going to try next after his naps is some naked time! Which is basically when he's playing let him go naked from the waist down so I can watch for cues and signs that he needs to go to the toilet and also for him to really get a feel for it out of nappies. This isn't going to happen overnight (unfortunately) but I want to keep you updated on what worked and what didn't for us and hopefully in a few weeks/months Kye will be a potty pro! ;)
